Madrid y Barcelona: finally, friends

Can you imagine Madrid and Barcelona as soulmates? Not just acquaintances or frenemies... but the kind of friends who videocall each other to share dramas and celebrations. Sounds like science fiction, we know. For years, we’ve seen them as polar opposites: one with a strong Castilian accent, the other singing Catalan rumba — each with its own pride, rhythm, and way of life.

Madrid’s always been racing at full speed. It’s the capital that never slows down, rushing across crosswalks, tapas at the bar, and a quick beer that never waits. Barcelona, on the other hand, seems to have a different tempo: one set by the sea, where bikes rule and dinner’s late but delicious. And while they’ve often traded side-eyes more than smiles, both cities share something essential: passion, character, and a kind of vibe you just can’t ignore.

Until now, it seemed like you had to pick a side. “Are you Madrid or Barcelona?” as if they were sports teams or just incompatible. But at Folcs, we see it differently. We believe you can love both, and you should.

We enjoy the Madrilenian cocido that steams on Sundays, and we get emotional over the escudella that brings the whole family together. We’re fans of the solemn Almudena Cathedral as much as the dreamlike architecture of the Sagrada Familia. We dance chotis at San Isidro and sardana in the neighborhood square. Because for us, it’s not about taking sides but breaking the chocolate bar and sharing it generously.

So what if instead of setting them against each other, we mix them? No joke: we tried a calamari sandwich with bread and tomato, and hey, it’s pretty good. Then we dared to dip churros in crema catalana… and that’s when we realized: this isn’t about choosing one or the other. It’s about adding up. Bringing together the best of both worlds and savoring it prejudice-free.

When you mix the good stuff, amazing things happen. Imagine a Plaza del Sol turning into a Playa del Sol, where instead of protests there are naps on the sand, and pedestrians bump into people in flip flops and sunscreen. Anything’s possible when your heart is open and your mind is too.

Madrid and Barcelona share more than it seems. They’re two different ways of expressing the same essence: enjoying life, sharing, and going all in on life. Both pulse with energy, history, art, and nightlife... and yes, both have their quirks, like any good friend. But they also have that something special that makes them unique and together, they could multiply it.
